Bioaerosol Monitoring

Bioaerosol are airborne particles produced by organic matter being broken down by microorganisms. This process allows particles of dust and water to be released into the air forming bio-aerosols, these are then carried by the wind beyond the operating site boundary. The bio-aerosols are tiny, less than 20 microns in diameter making them easily inhaled leading to potentially harmful effects.

Bio-aerosols have been of concern to many operators for some time, and assessing their impact in the local amenity can sometimes cause confusion. Bioaerosol releases from certain waste operations have been concerning the Environment Agency, namely open windrow and closed vessel composting, anaerobic digestion plants, and other waste handling applications.

Air Spectrum work closely with The National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit (NPARU), which is a leading institution in research and commercial activity in the area of aerobiology; studying all aspects of the aerial dispersal, distribution and impact of biological particles present in outdoor and indoor air.

Air Spectrum Environmental is able to provide a wide range of services and support to site operators:

  • Desktop dispersion model surveys
  • Meteorological monitoring and data collection
  • On site short and long term sampling according to the EA guidance M17
  • Monitoring for specific pathogens using the latest available technology
  • Access to services of the National Pollen & Aerobiology Centre
