Site Odour Assessment

Site odour assessments consider all of the sources of odorous emissions within a defined site boundary or area. It is then possible to define their potential individual contribution to the total odour yield. Once these are understood, we are able to build up an understanding of how best to control to reduce the odour emissions.

Site Odour Assessment

Our expert air quality consultants will conduct an initial assessment to build an emissions inventory of possible sources of odour by safely smelling them and recording their impact using the FIDOL method of scoring. FIDOL considers: Frequency, Intensity, Duration, Offensiveness and Location.

Fidol

Frequency – how often an individual is exposed to an odour

Intensity – odour strength as perceived by an individual

Duration – how long the individual(s) were exposed to an odour over time

Offensiveness – the odour’s unpleasantness or hedonic tone (which may be pleasant, neutral or unpleasant)

Location – the type of land use and nature of human activities in the vicinity of an odour source and the tolerance expectation of the receptor.

Determining the odour emissions and source on site before implementing any odour abatement or process control is the most efficient and cost effective means of achieving a successful odour control solution.
