The Origins: Space Grade Sensors In Your Building

“We realised that the problem astronauts face with limited air exchange inside the International Space Station is also the case for many people inside buildings that have little to no ventilation.”

A new addition

Our past few blogs have centred around the latest addition to the Air Spectrum Environmental product range – the Airgloss ProSensethe indoor air quality smart monitor. However, perhaps the most fascinating part of the ProSense lies within its origin. A fantastic story lies behind the creation of the only Indoor Air Quality monitor to be awarded the European Space Agency’s ‘Space Solutions Trademark’…

The beginning

Beginning its journey in 2013, the Airgloss ProSense is the first product in a now expanding line for the Italian company Airgloss. Joining the European Space Agencies Business Incubation Centre allowed Airgloss the opportunity to develop space grade sensors to monitor the Air Quality on board the International Space Station. The need was to identify any potential pollutants which may be leaking into the environment, and potentially cause harm to the occupants.

The mission

The Airgloss sensors accompanied by the Italian Astronaut, Roberto Vittori achieved their mission in 2011, a testament to the robustness and ease of use of the monitors design.

Upon the completion of the mission, the Airgloss journey began with the development team looking to find possible markets where the technology could make a real difference. Commercialising the sensors for indoor air quality monitoring in workplaces and homes of all different types.

The synergies between the ISS and most office complexes and buildings was commented on by founder Ciro Formisano stating “We realised that the problem astronauts face with limited air exchange inside the International Space Station is also the case for many people inside buildings that have little to no ventilation”.

Fast forward to today, the Airgloss ProSense is delivering valuable Indoor Air Quality data to a wide range of markets, including Offices, Real Estate, Hotels, Educational and Leisure Facilities. NEW software features, such as a Public Display Dashboard make the process of sharing your Indoor Air Quality data with colleagues, customers, or visitors easier than ever.
